Every weekend paper invites a retired friend of mine to embrace the brisk 0700am air, driving in response to a backlit programmed Tom Tom to the open gates and lawns of neighbouring families with their history of domestic material possessions sprawled and signposted for a dollar or two.
My friend loves the conversations and genuine connect that people provide, stories behind items that surface when asking to buy the once treasured possession, but mostly the extreme value available door after door. People’s preference to downsize with little effort allows compromise and leeway that benefits the punter with loose change in hand and the foresight to identify a return on investment. Some items need a clean and others are still in their original box, my friend makes between $150 to $250 profit each week for a morning of browsing, buying, preparing and presenting on eBay to the world with postage done in an afternoon.
Her items of interests include books, boxes of magazines, toys, potential antiques (she found a heavy mantelpiece clock bought for $20 and sold for $280) and general branded items (like a U2 poster or a Ferrari Mug).
I know there are bigger money opportunities to be made from eBay but sharing this lateral approach to supplementary income for a retiree is relevant for anyone who’s interest in creating a lateral income is more so based in the pace of life, the journey rather than the destination and the conversations along the way.

Always the dreamer, I think and visualise potential paths in life daily, out a habit. Anticipating outcomes and ways of creating an income that increases my free time and/ or money. There’s an underlying point my partner articulated a few months ago that hadn’t seemed to resonate previously with her- To achieve non normal outcomes, it requires non normal actions. It seems the obvious statement but I’ve met so many people in life who are simply not prepared to embrace that reality and act without intent to graft a new direction onto the body of their work/ life commitments.

If the recipe of your life is without change, if you’re not prepared to step outside the box, to live life on Mars, to be out of your comfort zone- you’re without a lateral lifestyle as it’s out of reach of what is normally required. I believe we need to think differently, embrace what’s foreign, deliberately leave the paths that nurture our comforts and egos to become the student who is open to learning what most aren’t prepared to see, hear or understand.

Someone once said to me, “If you pop your head up and see a crowd of people gathered, head in the other direction.” Embracing the lateral income lifestyle is to me, very much the other direction. How exciting!
Since November of 2002, springwise has published ideas 5 days of every week more often than not, segmenting their news into 20 topics. My favourite topics are Food and Beverage, Life Hacks, Lifestyle and Leisure, Retail and lastly Tourism and Travel.

The page really is aligned to the spirit of this website, it nurtures Entrepreneurial minds, it rewards the brave who’s business’s are discussed. It promotes and encourages the mindset that new paths can be created. It’s proof for those of us still questioning what’s possible. Check it out; I have been for years now and it still puts the spring in my step with some fantastic ideas!

Although my partner and I are getting closer to controlling our finances effectively, “complacent” would best describe our consistency…hmmmm. Anyway, an important element of creating financial freedom in life is dependent on your discipline of being aware of all incoming and (especially) outgoing expenses.

Motivated by the reality of expecting our second baby, I recently attempted to decisively gain control of all things monetary. I made a list with my partner of all outstanding expenses, from our previous year’s tax to work expenses, private medical insurance rebates, mostly awkward administrative related tasks, boring processes……..all offering REAL financial gain. I was kicking myself when I totalled the listed tasks to find we could create over $6,000 by sitting down and doing the uninspiring.

Reading about all ideas that resonate with creating a “lateral income”, I realise that some opportunities/ paths we may want to take, require capital, money to spend that so many people just don’t have at hand. My question is, – Do you?

I personally think laterally when under pressure, sometimes the dilemma is responsible for the solution. Perhaps I can provide you the inspiration by sharing the financial success created with the boring paperwork around the home office/ fridge magnets!

As a young man, my boss at the hotel I worked at requested I take two weeks of annual leave before Christmas. I’d been working in the hotel for nearly five years and had accumulated a large amount of leave, the company wanted that reduced for financial reasons. So as I’d just finished studying and with it being late November at the time, I had a spontaneous moment; what to do, where to go?

A friend was driving interstate in 10 days from Darwin to Perth (4350km/ 2700 miles), so I asked to tag along for the road trip, figuring I’d fly home on arrival. As I packed I realised many options this instant and prescribed direction contained. Stay in Perth for a week, a month, permanently? That was it, “I’m relocating in 10 days!” Hey, I was 20 and owned about……a guitar and a box of clothes!!….no, seriously.

I’m discussing this experience because I wanted to relate a thought/ feeling I had on the first night setting up the tent at Lake Argyle after an 820km/ 510mile drive. The change in climate, the different layout of the land, the REFRESHINGLY new headspace I’d gained as I was now in a transition of life, I was inspired and rewarded for taking action in a new direction. I was also sharply aware of how stagnant I was in life… ouch!

These liberating thoughts made me feel alive and positive. I felt this way when buying my first website, writing the first blog. Options I chose to take from many directions available in life every day. Sometimes you need to be pushed out of routine before you can gain clarity. If life feels “medicated” to you, I can recommend you act on an option available to you that sparks your interest and perhaps initially makes you uncomfortable. Give it a license to do so, embrace that blank page that dares you to create!

Hi, Dan here. I wanted our first connection to resonate with the priorities we keep and possibly share, the big picture ones.
Hi, Dan here. I wanted our first connection to resonate with the priorities we keep and possibly share, the big picture ones. Yeah, the cliche “family time” crowns the list for me, although I’ll be writing with an understanding that people are a varied sort (perhaps our greatest beauty?). So if you’re greatest priorities in life involve creating free time on your Harley Davidson across the state or a way to make money to save for plastic surgery, good luck to you, hopefully we can impact positively on each other’s life.

In doing this I’d like to share a thought- If the money we make covers the necessities in life and we find ways to earn excess, this excess can “enable” us. The waste of money comes if it’s not used to enable us, either currently or in time (such as a retirement fund- sorry Tim Ferriss!) I hope your success with money in life enables you, there are many vices in life that parade a fairly hollow truth, keep an eye out, if something takes away from your happiness, your time and money has a better use somewhere else.

The primary reason for this Blog and the accompanying website is to assist in creating more money and time in our lives whilst sketching out directions to nurture these “enablers” perpetually. It’s exciting how information is a powerful catalyst between you and the new. Let’s go!
